It all started so simply
Approximately 5 weeks ago, I wrote a blog called “Chin Up Old Boy” and posted it onto twitter, and the resulting chaos and mental media attention blew me away. For those of you that are not aware of what happened try reading “Social Media Gone Crazy“…and it continued from there.
Get a job!
I was unemployed and all I wanted was a job, to provide a source of income to feed my family and keep a roof over our heads!
What I got was;
- Lot’s of friends
- Worldwide exposure
- An interview live on BBC Essex Radio with Dave Monk
- Potential job leads from Dubai and Alice Springs
- Opportunities to speak at events like Be2CampEast
- Guest blogging for Roberta Ward, Rob Cameron
- Association with a wonderful Charity for EACH called Tree House Appeal
- A “Tweetoff” with Sarah Beeny
- A Caricature of me (now on a T Shirt raising money for the Tree House Appeal)
- The chance to co-host a radio show for BBC Essex Radio
- And of course a job!! (The whole point right??!!)
All of this is amazing, and for it to of happened in such a short space of time is even more amazing, and I pinch myself some days, honestly I do.
Look in the Mirror
All of this has led to something even more amazing, my story was in the Daily Mirror today (Friday 9th April 2010). And a little bit in the Sun too.
I took a call yesterday from a photographer from the Mirror who wanted to take pictures of me at my new workplace. All very exciting, yet, if you see the picture of me in the Mirror…it’s bloody awful..ha ha ha.
How it worked was a free lance journo picked up on my story, and sent it off to a few of the national papers, the Mirror wanted to run with it and hence the call from the photographer.

Age of children is slighltly wrong.
And I don’t like the way it was published without me proof reading it first. I DO NOT like the fact they have sourced my children’s names and put them in there. I don’t like the way they have written about me sharing photo’s on the web of my wife and kids, it makes me sound like a wierdo, which I am not! I know they are only writing a brief, edited version, but the basic facts aren’t that hard to find! If in doubt ask – right?
Radio hopping!
I took a call yesterday from Isaac at BBC Suffolk Radio, who had heard of my story and connections with the Tree House Appeal. They have asked me to go live on air on the 15th May to talk about how I got involved with the appeal and what I have done and am doing to raise awareness for it!! Very excited about that!!
Social Media
It’s amazing how powerful Social Media actually is. Until you delve into it, and experience it, then you can understand it a little more. I know it has helped my find a job, and make some great friends. And that’s just the tip of the iceberg!
It also helps you help other people. I spoke to a lady called Sarah Pearson yesterday, who is raising money for Mental Health Foundation in memory of her brother Stephen. She is running the BUPA 10K. I am keen to raise a little awareness for this charity so, please click on this link and help to support Sarah….thank you.
